A Day Out.

The sun is shining, the bees are buzzing, it all feels very summery and wonderful (I'm writing this with a storm brewing, so you'll just have to use your imagination).

It is the season for days out.

Just suppose you could choose anywhere, reachable for just one day, where would you go? What would you do?

Of course, my little blog cannot claim to be representative. But I'm rather hoping for as many different ideas as I have visitors. Maybe you want to trek up a mountain, or soak yourself under a waterfall? Or you plan a trip to a stately home, where you can marvel on how the rich and powerful spend their money. Or you'd rather visit a small town, potter among the shops, pick up a trinket or two. Or you want to go to Open Golf at Wentworth, or the racing, or to play a game of tennis. You might sit in a cafe, eat cake and watch the world go by.

Days out are rejuvenating and wonderful. Preparatory days are full of organising: tickets, picnics, anxiously watching the weather. Should you take the dog? Will the traffic be kind? How early should you leave to give yourselves plenty of time? Check those opening times one more time.

Me - this is where I went:

Are there people who go to Ascot who are more interested in the hats than the racing? Or get tickets for Wimbledon and dream of strawberries?

There is no point in going to Lords unless you are interesting in cricket. I know, if I begin to wax lyrical about the delights of cricket that most of you will move on. It's not your thing and there's nothing I could say to tempt you. That's fine - as long as you have something else that is equally special in your life.

And so I will only tell you that I had the most wonderful day. The sort of day all of us need from time to time. So - where are you off to?

  1. Wow! Am so envious. I went to Trent Bridge last week but would love a trip to Lords. One of my favourite days out is to a place called Coton Manor Gardens in Northamptonshire which is about 40 minutes from home. Bluebells in the Spring, a Wild Flower Meadow in the Summer, a small lake, roses, chickens on the lawn. My idea of heaven on earth. A lovely post - thank-you.

    1. Ah bluebells . . . We have a wood near here with carpets of them in May. Your gardens sound lovely - and maybe one day I'll make it to Trent Bridge! Thanks for joining in.

  2. I know next to nothing about cricket, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy a day spent watching it. I believe the right attitude can make anything an enjoyable adventure. I love one-day and weekend trips, no matter where we go. The mountains, the woods, the water, a city with lots of museums and activities, quaint towns with old houses and antique shops. It doesn't matter. I love it all!

    1. I so agree - the attitude you go with is the crucial bit. Misery-guts find it hard to enjoy anything!

  3. My husband, daughter & now son-in-law go to lords. Husb. has always gone, even as a student. Once, he was lucky enough to be offered a ticket to the Members stands AND YOU CAN SEE THE CRICKET FROM THE LOOS!!! so they never miss a single ball ..as it were. Lovely blog.

  5. A walk by the sea , lunch , and then in the evening a glass of wine overlooking the sea...

  6. I've just come home after several weeks away. And my idea of a day out is to laze around at home! However we have a busy time coming up and lazing is not on the agenda!

  7. Cricket!? Are you serious?! I suppose you are as there's a photograph to prove it. I would take myself off to our local Botanic Gardens, stroll around the ornamental pond area and then sit in a shady spot and have tea and cake (they do an impressive offering of cakes at our local Botanic Garden Tea Room).

  8. I don't know what I'd do. Probably jump in the car and go to a very quiet beach with the dog or to some woods near us with a small loch as long as no other dogs are about it will be lovely.

  9. Hi Jo, I'm a bit late here, but I think you know I'd have been right alongside you there at Lords. I'd just love to spend a day watch cricket!!
