Spam, wonderful ...

I know, I'm as fed up with it as the rest of us. All those anonymous messages in my inbox that tell me how wonderful the blog is and please will I check out their website for loans or a new penis.

And then I received these:

I am a regular visitor, how are you everybody? This article posted at this web page is actually fastidious.
(This came with a link to a dietary thing - do I look like I need a diet?)

You really make it appear so easy with your presentation however I find this matter to be actually one thing that I feel I'd by no means understand. It seems too complex and extremely huge for me. I am having a look forward to your subsequent publish, I will attempt to get the grasp of it.
(From a gambling site. I know I take the odd risk with tigers, but can't see me playing poker at midnight!)

Attractive part of content. I simply stumbled upon your site and in accession capital to say that I get actually enjoyed account your blog posts. Any way I'll be subscribing for your feeds or even I success you get right of entry so consistently rapidly.
(From a payday loan site. Like I'm paid?)

I loved as much as you'll receive carried out right here. The sketch is attractive, your authored subject matter stylish. nonetheless, you command get got an impatience over that you wish be delivering the following. unwell questionably come for formerly again as exactly the same nearly very often inside case you shield this increase.
(I think the colloquial term is WTF?)

Clamped Edging 3. Does Sizing the psyche of the penis.
(Last time I looked, I don't think I had one of those ...)

Yes, they are all gobbledegook - enough to make me smile. But it's still getting irritating. I deleted the capcha thingy as it irritates everyone (including me) but I'm getting these most days now. However, they seem to have found only a few pages at the moment.

So, the plan is to delete the labels from posts that are attracting a lot of spam, and see if that helps. If it doesn't, then I'll delete the posts themselves.

And then ... we'll see. I know I could approve all comments, but that would mean keeping two days a week free-ish to monitor the blog, and that's not so easy.

Any thoughts? Are any other bloggers wondering how long they can carry on being labelled as fastidious? Or presenting huge and complex ideas? Or have a penis with a psyche?

  1. Funnily enough Jo, Ros Adam and I were talking about exactly the same thing yesterday when we met up.

I suddenly got loads of these, adn it's a pain deleting them all.but like you I can't bear the captcha thingymajig.I can't read half the letters...and when I turn on the sounds, I can't understand what is being said either!

The spam usually goes on older posts...so I've now set a 40 day limit for people to post a comment on a blog ....hoping that works for me ..

    Good luck!

  2. It's true. Bridget came round yesterday and we pondered over this very problem. As she says, we set up both our blogs so that any comments on older blogs (you can choose the time length) have to be moderated. Very few of us real bloggers comment on older posts so they can Wait until you've got a minute to check them out. It comes through as an email to you. It's worth a try.

  3. I do this too (again Ros'advice|)All comments come to me viua email, so I automatically delete any that are on older posts. Your 'spam' read exactly like span I get!! If you use our system, you can delete before it reaches your blog. I leave mine open for 'anon' because blogger can be temperamental, and I've had people leave legit comments, saying they could only get the Anon one to accept it. It's either that or the robot thingy, and we all get sooo annoyed by it!!

  4. Thank you all. I think I've done the date-thing, which should stop the clogging of old posts. I'm so reluctant to go back to the captcha thingy, so we'll see how this works (if if it means I'm never called fastidious ever again!)

    1. No, please don't go back to the Captcha. I hate it!

  5. This is sooooo getting on my nerves too! Thankfully my spam catcher (can't recall proper term) catches most of them, but so frustrating!
I don't moderate or captcha (hate captcha with a passion), and don't want to stop anonymous...so like you I've been more careful with my labels, to see if it makes any difference!

    1. Lisa - I've also tried the time-limited thing that Anne has mentioned above - go into settings and play with the button that says who can comment (I think - it's in there somewhere). Anything rather than go back to the captcha-thingy.

    1. I'm not sure I can face finding my way around another blogging site - I've so much other writing to do. But I take your point, Miriam, it is rather over-spammy around here.

  7. I have noticed that I'm getting more of this garbage myself, but so far it hasn't become a real problem. I just scan comments for anything anonymous and flick my eyes quickly across on the way to the "delete" button. I find it more annoying to get loads of gobbledegook on the form in my other blog. It takes some trouble to fill it in and send it off and there are people who still think it's worth doing it just to send me several inches worth of random letters and numbers. Strange, very strange.

    1. I think it's irritating, Jenny, rather than being a problem at the moment. But it's an irritation I could do without - there are so many wonderful things to read without this waffle.

And what you do about gobbledegook on your other blog - no idea. I haven't had that one yet. (Just hope no one gets ideas, reading this!)

  8. Hi Ji, I had a spell of them too a few weeks back, but it's stopped now. I just deleted the spam comments and stopped using labels, and now I haven't had any for a while. I think they probably also just go for a selected range of pages for a while and then move on to the next lot. I like Blogger better than Wordpress, but then maybe it's because I'm and blogger and it has features I've got used to and I like, so I'm staying.

    1. Oh how strange, I know I wrote 'because I'm an old blogger'...I saw it! and now it's just I'm and blogger. Well anyway, that's probably my lap top...:-)
